1.1 Computer Studies as a field of study
Computer Science is the discipline that involves the understandi ng and design of computers and
computational processes. In its most general form, it is concerned with the understandi ng of
information transfer and transformation. Particular interest is paced on making processes
efficient and endowing them with some form of intelligence. The discipline ranges from
theoretical studies of algorithms to cutting-edge development of computing solutions.
The work of Computer scientists falls into three categories:
(a)Designing and building software;
(b)Developing effective ways to solve computing problems, such as storing information on
database, sending data over networks or providing new approach to security problems;
(c)Devising new and better ways of using computers and addressing particular challenges in
areas such as robotics, computer vision, or forensics.
Goals of Computer Science Education
Broadly, the learning goals of computer science education are:
To make students proficient in problem solving techniques and recognizing the broad
relevance of computational thinking in everyday life, as well as its applicability within
other domains.
